Responsibilities & Qualifications of a Cast / Orthopedic Technician:

  • Pediatric experience preferred
  • Performs procedures in the office or hospital setting, as prescribed by the physician and supervised by clinical manager.
  • Applies, maintains and removes casts, traction and other splint or motion devices
  • Administers orthotic braces and devices to clients
  • Instructs, motivates, and assists clients in learning and improving functional activities.
  • Instructs patient and family members on the proper use and care of casts or devices.
  • Reports changes in the client’s condition to the supervising clinical manager and/or physician appropriately.
  • Prepares clinical notes and progress reports, documenting treatments performed, and submits them for review to the supervising clinical manager.
  • Communicates effectively with all members of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Travels to various hospital campuses within the same ‘region’ as needed throughout the day and/or week
  • Knowledge of Insurance a Major Plus
  • Must be flexible, able to multi-task and willing to work physicians’ hours
  • Must be physically capable to stand for long periods of time and walk throughout the facility as needed.

SUMMARY

The Campus Facilities Department is responsible for day-to-day maintenance and repairs of the Exploratorium’s facilities and maintains security and safety systems. The department provides support for day and evening special events and public programs. The Campus Facilities Technician I/II/III must be competent in all the areas mentioned above since this person may be the only Campus Facilities Technician on duty. This position reports to the Senior Manager, Campus Facilities and is required to work with and without supervision, using skills and knowledge in the areas below. The schedule may include all shifts: day, evenings, and weekends as required.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Campus Facilities Technician I

  • Help maintain, repair and upgrade electrical systems to power exhibits and workspaces.
  • Assist in maintenance and development of facilities, including:
    • Electrical tasks such as installation and replacement of circuit breakers, connectors and plugs
    • Painting and dry walling of interior and exterior walls and offices
    • Lighting tasks such as re-lamping and general ballast changes
    • Plumbing tasks including replacement and repair of faucets and plumbing fixtures
    • Changing belts and filters on HVAC system
    • Perform ergonomic workstation modifications for Exploratorium staff.
  • Support safety and security functions, including First Aid and CPR coverage and the operation and response to fire and burglar alarm systems.
  • Provide logistical support for museum rentals, special events and programs (during evening and/or weekend hours), including providing access to electrical outlets; restoring museum floor to original condition for public opening; serving as primary provider of First Aid/CPR.
  • Provide Campus Facilities Department coverage during evening, weekend and holiday hours.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Campus Facilities Technician II

  • Maintain, repair, document and upgrade mechanical systems to provide fresh air and thermal comfort to office and public spaces. Replace air filters, water filtration systems. Repair pumps and gearboxes.
  • Maintain, repair, document and upgrade electrical system to provide power to equipment and workspaces throughout (322K ft2). Repair electrical equipment.
  • Maintain, develop, repair, and modify office and public facilities, including interior construction, lighting, plumbing, HVAC, fire safety equipment.
  • Provide technical support for programmatic operations including permanent and temporary exhibit installations, as well as for outside vendors and contractors using the facility through Museum Rentals and Special Events.
  • Problem-solve and troubleshoot a wide range of unique or site-specific solutions including work under piers and other unusual spaces, with a strong safety standards for self and others.
  • Actively support and promote a safe and secure physical environment for staff and public.  Assist Campus Facilities Manager in maintaining Cal/OSHA compliance throughout facilities.  Operate fire safety and security systems.  Provide First Aid as needed by the public and staff. 
  • Other duties as assigned 

Campus Facilities Technician III

  • Maintain, repair, document and upgrade electrical system to provide power to exhibits and workspaces.  Repair electrical equipment.
  • Maintain, develop, repair, and modify facilities, including construction, painting, wall repair, ventilation, lighting, plumbing, HVAC, fire safety equipment.
  • Maintain First Aid and CPR certification by American Red Cross, and provide First Aid as needed by the public and staff.  Assist Campus Facilities Manager in maintaining Cal/OSHA compliance throughout facilities.  Operate fire safety and security systems. 
  • Provide technical support for Museum Rentals, Special Events, and programmatic operations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English verbally, in writing, and by two-way radio.
  • Willingness to work some nights and weekends as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Campus Facilities Technician I

  • One year’s related outside experience or two year’s Exploratorium experience.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others, use good judgment and reflect the department and Exploratorium in a positive way.
  • Ability to follow instructions.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Demonstrated ability to work safely and conscientiously with tools and live electrical installations (120 volts to ground).
  • Conform to Cal. OSHA’s Respirator Protection, Forklift and Platform Lift Programs.
  • Certification in AHA or Red Cross CPR and First Aid or ability to become certified.
  • Acceptance and ability to work required weekends, evenings, and night on-call assignments.

Campus Facilities Technician II

  • 3 years of related experience or minimum 2 years’ experience as an Operations Tech I and ability to demonstrate the required skills.
  • Demonstrates excellent mechanical skills; understanding pump theory and operation, fan operation, etc.
  • Demonstrates excellent skills working on electrical systems; design and installation of utilization equipment, branch circuits, feeders, overcurrent protection, etc., to National Electrical Code specifications
  • Fully knowledgeable of and able to demonstrate safe work practices on live electrical circuits.
  • Intermediate to advanced level skills in construction trades and machine shop techniques: including welding, metal fabrication, hydraulic repair, plumbing, use of wood and metal machines, hand and portable power tools.
  • Demonstrated expertise using tools related to mechanical maintenance: hand tools (wrenches, ratchets, sockets, etc.), power tools (portable saws, impact drivers, drills, etc.)
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English verbally, in writing, and by two-way radio.
  • Safe practices when working around large industrial equipment.
  • Experience driving forklift, scissors lift, and boom-lift in confined areas.
  • Certification in Red Cross CPR and First Aid or willingness to become certified.  Prior experience in handling first aid emergencies.
  • Able to train others in first aid, basic safety, and emergency procedures.
  • Able to understand and apply various federal, state, and local codes regarding construction trades, safe work practices, etc (e.g. UBC, NEC, Fire Code, CFR, ADA, Cal/OSHA)
  • Able to work independently and/or with others to design, manage and carry out significant projects with minimal supervision
  • Able to troubleshoot and problem solve effectively
  • Basic computer literacy: e-mail, ability to learn and use MS Word, Excel
  • Create spreadsheets and document daily work
  • Willingness to work nights and weekends as assigned.

Campus Facilities Technician III

  • Minimum 4 years related experience
  • Advanced level skills working on electrical systems; design and installation of utilization equipment, branch circuits, feeders, overcurrent protection, etc, to National Electrical Code specifications 
  • Fully knowledgeable of and able to demonstrate safe work practices on live electrical circuits.
  • Certification in Red Cross CPR and First Aid (and/or certification as Instructor) and prior experience in handling first aid emergencies.
  • Intermediate to advanced level skills in construction trades and machine shop techniques: including framing, carpentry, cabinet making, painting and dry walling, plumbing, use of wood and metal machines, hand and portable power tools.
  • Working knowledge of locksmithing techniques, especially Schlage pin-tumbler cylinders, and standard master key systems; ability to track and enter key records on File Maker computer program.
  • Experience driving forklift, scissors lift, and boom-lift in confined areas.
  • Able to train others in first aid, basic safety, and emergency procedures.

Responsibilities:

  • Diagnose, build, rebuild, and repair all parts of equipment, mechanical, and electrical systems.
  • Perform inspection, diagnosis, and repair of electrical, hydraulic systems, suspension, brake, and air systems on vehicles and equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and perform failure analysis of component parts and systems on trucks, tractors, or secondary component parts and systems of the trailer or vacuum/blower units.
  • Welding and fabricating to repair and build trucks and secondary equipment.
  • Plumbing, electrical, basic carpentry, and pump rebuilding and repair.
  • Complete equipment maintenance records.

Requirements:

  • Preferred a valid Commercial Driver’s License.
  • Must have a minimum of 5 years of experience in plant and/or truck maintenance.
  • Knowledge and understanding of DOT, EPA, and OSHA rules and regulations as well as the proper handling of hazardous material.
  • Experience in Microsoft Office, specifically Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Based at our Lorton, VA facility, we seek a dedicated Electrical and Instrumentation Technician who is a skilled, detail-oriented, and self-motivated individual with responsibilities that may include but are not limited to installation, troubleshooting,  inspecting, calibrating, and maintaining electrical, instrumentation, and distributive control (DCS) and high pressure equipment throughout the facility safely and professionally.

This individual will have a strong electrical background in high power, including experience in instrument calibration, PLC, and DCS programming/troubleshooting.  

In addition, the candidate must also possess the skills for the maintenance, repair, and operation of field controllers, instrumentation, motor control centers, and other power plant electrical equipment ranging from 24 VDC to 13.8kV.

Position Requirements:

To be considered for this position:

  • Must have at least five years of experience as a Maintenance Electrician/ Instrumentation in a power plant or a similar field.
  • Strong working knowledge of electrical systems
  • Proficient with Ladder Logic and or Function Block for PLCs (Allen-Bradley SLC-500 and Control Logix)
  • Must be able to read schematics and blueprints
  • Knowledgeable of Bailey Infi / NET90 DCS
  • Ability to Interpret and navigate P&ID’s 
  • Strong Troubleshooting abilities
  • Experience repairing Crane electrical controls, pneumatics, and hydraulics
  • Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS) is a plus

Licenses and Education:

  • Must have a High School diploma/GED.
  • Additional formal technical training or Military Electrical technical training is preferred
